The author recalls a debate held at the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association in the 1970s between psychoanalysts and sex researchers Masters and Johnson. The topic was vaginal vs. clitoral orgasm. Freudian psychoanalytic theory, the Women’s Movement and research in sexual function were aspects of the debate as well as important topics of the time and all have evolved in subsequent years.
