A very interesting article. For those interested, there is a documentary called "The Bridge" in which the foot-traffic on the bridge was filmed for a year. Several times the film captures jumpers and would-be jumpers. The family and friends of the jumpers are then interviewed. The film is powerful and chilling. Here is a link with a blurb about the film:

Dr. Blumenfield,

Very well done--a real service to the profession & community at large.

A couple of questions:
1. My recollection is that some 40+ years ago a study was done of Golden Gate Bridge Jump survivors which indicated most [?] had changed their minds on the way down. Any info on that?
2. Any thoughts of including a bibliography?

Again, many thanks for a fine piece of psychiatric journalism.

( The Blaustein & Flemming article in the October 2009 issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry issue has 20 references. There are two articles from the 1970s that discuss follow-up of persons who jumped and survived. or were stopped from jumping. In the latter article by Seiden attempted jumpers who were stopped between 1937 & 1971 (n=515) in 1978 94 % were alive or had died of natural causes. This suggests that they changed their mind. Of course the last case mentioned in the blog certainly changed his mind. - MB )
